NYC Tips

Sure, everybody wants to go see the Empire State building, the Statue of Liberty and Times Square. But you’re a New Yorker now! As a New Yorker, you know that those places don’t represent the city you call home. No, you need to take your family places to show how cultured you’ve become. Museums, art galleries, cute boutiques and awesome restaurants.

But what if your family wants to come upstairs to see your place? You haven’t done dishes in, who knows how long. Your bed is unmade, and you don’t even own a broom.

From start to finish of your family visiting, WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED!

  1. Call a cleaning service: I know… You’re thinking it’s going to be a million dollars. But actually Handy is really affordable and it’s a special occasion. Your family is coming to town. Don’t fight with your parents over your unfolded clothes, impress them with a clean apartment!
  2. Make a dinner reservation: It’s so simple yet so appreciated. Especially if you’re looking to go to a more upscale restaurant, nobody wants to have to wait around for a table! For a crowd pleaser, try Upland. The space is beautiful and the food is awesome.
  3. Take them to Chinatown to get some I <3 NYC tee shirts: Simple, affordable and SO NYC, Chinatown is a great place to take the fam. Get some tee shirts and just noodle around for a bit, and then finish off the afternoon at Rice to Riches. Seriously awesome rice pudding place that is so modern. Your family will be so amazed; you are so cool to go there.
  4. Go to a gallery and then have a nice lunch: Head to The Pace Gallery in Chelsea to view shows of some of the 20th centuries most significant artists. *Not Open Sundays* After perusing the gallery take them to lunch at Toro, a super chic tapas bar with a great wine menu too.
  5. Get some New York City pizza: Seriously, they don’t have good pizza in a lot of places around the world. New York City is one of the places you just HAVE to eat pizza. (Sorry diet). There are many places who are rumored to be the best pizza in NYC, but my pick is and will forever be John’s of Bleeker Street.
  6. Take them to Central Park: This is a very important step in showing how much of a New Yorker you are. Map out your trip if you don’t know your way around too well, maybe go with friends first to find the exact route you’d like to take. My recommendations are to take them to the pond and Gapstow Bridge, stroll under the leafy canopy of The Mall and, of course, the Bethesda Terrace & Fountain.
  7. Walk the High Line: Weather permitting, walking the High Line is a great way to so see Meatpacking from above. You can stop in at the Standard Biergarten for a beer or two afterwards!

Getting out of the city to enjoy the Fall’s gorgeous foliage is a gift. The North East offers breath taking views that you can’t see anywhere else! These trips are easy, affordable and a super fun way to spend a weekend.

  1. Bear Mountain State Park: Hiking paths, picnic spots, a merry-go-round and a zoo, this place will definitely give your friends snap-envy. You can even get here by boat taking the Circle Line’s Mountain Day Cruise! Located in Stony Point, NY.
  2. Blue Hill Farm: A charming country farm with gorgeous meadows and woodland paths, Blue Hill Farm is located on the Rockefeller Estate in Pocantico Hills. The farm is also very environmentally conscious focusing on sustainability. Located in Pocantico Hills NY.
  3. Rhinebeck, NY: Hop on Amtrak in Penn Station and go up to Rhinebeck! Just an easy hour and a half train ride in comfy chairs with breathtaking views of the Hudson River. Rhinebeck is a quaint town with cute boutiques, cafes and of course apple picking. Go on Sunday’s to enjoy their farmers market!
  4. Old Westbury Gardens: On Long Island’s North Shore you’ll find a historic mansion tucked away in 200 acres of beautiful gardens. Enjoy the changing leaves and on weekends in the fall they host “Rise of the Jack-O-Lanterns”. Stop by in the evening to get in the Halloween spirit!

8 APPS

It’s true, New York City is the greatest city in the world. But it’s size and complexity can make it very intimidating. Just remember, the city is your playground! Don’t keep going to the same places over and over, try new things every day! These apps will make your life easier in every way.

  1. ASAP54: This app is awesome. Let’s say you’re in the subway and you see someone wearing the coolest shirt you’ve ever seen. Snap a pic and submit in this app and it will tell you where to get it! (because who wants to talk to a stranger, am I right)
  2. DIGIT: I seriously cannot say enough how much this app has changed my life. It’s like a secret little tool that you sync with your bank accounts to help you save money. It takes out $3 here, $5 there, and bam at the end of the month you’ve saved like $150 without even trying! And the best part is that you don’t even notice it’s gone from your account. You can transfer the funds into your actual savings account, or treat yourself to an awesome spa day, or buy those shoes you’ve been eyeing.
  3. Sit or Squat: How many times have you sprinted up your stairs to your apartment to go to the bathroom?! Or had that awkward talk with the hostess at a 5 star restaurant… Too many times for me. But this app helps you avoid that! This is an interactive map of public restrooms near wherever you happen to be. Also, it allows users to rate the toilets as “sit” or “squat” so never go in blind again to those disgusting gas station bathrooms.
  4. Bumble: Maybe you’re single, or maybe you’ve got a significant other, bumble caters to both! For dating, this app allows the female to message first (yay ladies). For those who aren’t looking for a first date, they have Bumble BFF which can help you make more friends!
  5. Venmo: Another life-changing app to help you avoid awkward conversation. This app allows you to transfer money to people, so rather than putting 13 cards down at brunch you can just simply send your friends money! Also is great for roommate situations because rather than asking for $10 for the toilet paper, you can simply charge them. So convenient.
  6. Minibar: NO FEE BOOZE DELIVERY SERVICE. That’s all we need to say about that.
  7. Exit Strategy: This app helps you maneuver the subway system of NYC. It shows you the best place to stand in a station and which exit to take to make your trip as quick as possible. Great for when you’re trying to get to that interview on time, or an important meeting.
  8. Seamless: I live on seamless. Order food right from your phone, you can search menu items and you don’t have to call. It’s amazing. Download it.

If you’re looking to move to NYC, No Fee Rentals has the best apartments! They’re so cute and in awesome locations. They have studio apartments, multi-bedrooms available for a share, penthouse apartments, you name it they’ve got it. Give them a call today and they’ll help you find the apartment that’s perfect for you!

Until Next Time!

9 Mar 2016

In 2012, I graduated from college and moved to an awesome New York City apartment. A dream I shared with many post-grads, I started an internship in the music industry and moved in with my childhood best friend.

I started at the new company and quickly discovered that I was the youngest person by about 10 years.  I struggled to meet new people.  My roommates both worked in sales at companies where everyone was a twenty-something, attractive, and always looking to party after work. I would tag along to their happy hours, but I always felt like I was hanging out with their friends, and never my own. In a city of millions, it is so easy to feel completely isolated—somehow, it seems, earbuds are a silent way of saying, “don’t talk to me”. Everyone is constantly texting, snapchatting or instagramming when out with friends, seemingly communicating with unseen masses of friends you don’t have. You’re not alone if you’re feeling like this, and it’s not the end of the world.  Now, we have to actively make an effort to break through our phone screens and meet new people.

My mother lived in the city for over 20 years, so I would approach her regularly about my feelings of frustration. She would always say, “Just talk to people in the grocery store!” Maybe ideally, romantically, this could work.  You know, you catch the eye of someone in the next aisle, flash a coy smile and then you’re on your first date! (Or is that just the movies?)

Let’s think about it realistically: imagine if I saw someone in the grocery store buying an avocado. What would my mother expect me to do? “Hey, you like avocados? I LOVE avocados, we should go out sometime!”  This avocado-loving person would think that I was legitimately insane.  I already get strange looks from people just for smiling when I walk past them (that or they think I’m hitting on them). I’m from the country! We smile at strangers!  Weird right?

The biggest piece of advice I can offer anyone to meet new people in New York City is to not be consumed by your loneliness, and go explore.  Foster your relationship with yourself—learn to genuinely love and enjoy your own company.  Your own happiness will attract new friends and when you do, other people will be so attracted to your happiness you won’t be able to get them away from you.

Find reasons to get up and out of your NYC apartment.  If you work remotely or are a student, find a cute coffee shop in which to study.  Bond with someone through sarcasm and apathetic disinterest.  Instead of ordering take-out, find a quiet restaurant and treat yourself to a meal.  Hang out in a park.  Take yourself shopping.  Check out galleries in Chelsea or Brooklyn, maybe try the Brooklyn Flea or find Art Walks, where you can go look at galleries at night.

Expand your horizons and take a class.  Whether it be a cooking class, an art class, a yoga class or lightsaber fighting class (yes, this is real) you’ll be around a group of potential new friends with a shared interest. And a shared interest is your first step to friendship. New York City has innumerable classes to offer—find some here.

MeetUp.com is another valuable online resource that can help you to find like-minded individuals! Maybe you’ve just moved to New York from another country and you’re looking for a little piece of home, maybe you love hiking, or perhaps you simply want to hit the best happy hours in the city with fun people! Everyone on MeetUp is looking to meet new people and make friends! Check it out here.

Another great way to make a connection is through a four-legged pal. Besides the fact that you’ll never be alone in your apartment again, having a dog in New York City makes it easier to meet people. Also, you’ve got your love for dogs in common with all those strangers! Luckily for you, NoFee Rentals are pet-friendly. If you’re looking for more information about our pet-policy and great things to do with your dog in New York City, click here.

The only way to make new friends is really just to start talking to people, and to keep an open mind. Don’t rule out your neighbors, either. Friends come in all shapes, sizes and ages. I have been going to a knitting class that my 84 year old neighbor has at her store, and I’ll tell you, old ladies? They’re hilarious… more on that later though.

So once you’ve settled into your new NoFee Rentals apartment in your hot new NYC neighborhood, get out and make some new friends to fill your living room! If you haven’t found an apartment yet, you can definitely find one here.

Until next time!
